Evolution ... Anthemion
Right at the beginning of the establishment of the BGS, the search for an appropriate symbol has taken the original founding group along many pathways as they sought to embrace the various dimensions of the Society and its members. How to give eloquent expression to the themes of:
Academic excellence
Classical traditions
Cultural and intellectual links
The striving for excellence
Innovative thinking
The consensus was for a word of Greek origin and whilst several satisfied the basic criteria they were lacking in those important qualities of originality and uniqueness.
And so … ANTHEMION … stood apart.
This ornamental sculpture with a design motif of the honeysuckle flower was used in Ancient Greek architecture to adorn the buildings which were the unsurpassed expression of man’s achievement in intellectual, cultural and artistic excellence. Thus, to symbolize our modern day efforts to strive for excellence in all our endeavours … ANTHEMIONOver the years, the ANTHEMION name and motif has been used in various ways:

-  “ANTHEMION†specially designed and created in jewelry with the use of various materials gold, silver, combination of silver and gold, combination of gold, platinum and various precious stones, etc.“ANTHEMION†the BGS Visa card issued by the Piraeus Bank which was in circulation for many years.“ANTHEMION†the BGS annual membership card.    Â
